Why use a daylight lamp?
Haven't we all experienced this?
When the amount of daylight in autumn no-
ticeably decreases or after it has done
nothing but rain for days on end, it some-
times doesn't take long before we feel a
lack of energy or imbalance creeping up on
us, sometimes along with listlessness or
even depression. The reason for this can
be a light deficiency syndrome associated
with the impaired quality of life just de-
scribed.
Light, and sunlight in particular, is vital to
nature and above all also for us humans!
Sunlight indirectly controls the production
of melatonin, which is released into the
blood only in darkness. This hormone tells
the body when it is time to sleep. In the
months when there is less sunlight, there-
fore, production of melatonin increases.
This makes it harder to get up in the morn-
ing, since the body's functions are shut
down. If you use the daylight lamp immedi-
ately after waking up in the morning—thus
as early as possible—you can end the pro-
duction of melatonin so that your mood ta-
kes a positive turn. In addition, light defi-
ciency also hinders production of the hap-
piness hormone serotonin, which deci-
sively affects our well-being. So application
of light involves quantitative changes in
hormones and neurotransmitters in the
brain, which can affect our level of activity,
our feelings and our well-being. Light can
help reverse this hormone imbalance.
The simplest and often most effective me-
thod of countering light deficiency syn-
dromes is taking long walks in fresh air.
Even when the sky is overcast, the light in-
tensity (measured in lux; one lux corre-
sponds to the light of one candle) is still
high enough to meet the requirement of at
least 2500 lux.
This unit simulates daylight over 10000 lux
(15-20 cm) and can be used to treat or
prevent light deficiency. A normal electric
light, by contrast, is insufficient for building
enough serotonin. In a well-lit office, for
example, the light intensity is no more than
500 lux. Exercise—outdoors, if possible—
also helps counter a bad mood. This is be-
cause movement releases endorphins,
which cause feelings of happiness. And
along with this, we ought above all not to
forget: Even autumn and winter have
plenty of pleasant sides.
