D. Glossary
10BASE-T Cross-over Cable — A standard 10BASE-T
Ethernet cable with pins 1 & 3 and 2 & 6 crossed to allow two
Ethernet devices with the same pin specification to communicate
directly with one another.
Access Point  An internetworking device that seamlessly
connects wired and wireless networks together.
Bandwidth — The size (in Hertz) of the frequency range that a
signal transmission occupies.  Typical narrow band signals oc-
cupy a 25 KHz bandwidth.  The RangeLAN2 signal occupies a 1
MHz bandwidth.
Channel — In RangeLAN2 networks, the channel refers to the
frequency hopping sequence the card follows.
CSMA/CA — (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoid-
ance) — CSMA is a protocol in which each node senses whether
or not a channel is in use before attempting to transmit informa-
tion.  CA is an optimization by which channel time is reserved to
avoid collisions.
DCE  — (Data Communication Equipment) — A device, such as
a modem, which connects to a DTE with a serial cable, that
allows a DTE to send and receive data with remote locations.
DTE — (Data Terminal Equipment) — A device, such as a
computer or dumb terminal, which connects to a DCE from its
serial port in order to send and receive data with remote locations.
Download Image — A software file that is used to upgrade the
software code running on the Ethernet Adapter.
