Saving money and time 
“We had a good business case for making the switch 
from IBM Tivoli to HP Data Protector,” says Guntofte. 
“The new HP equipment will pay for itself in less than 
four years. At the same time, we had an incredible 
reduction in restore time, roughly from days to hours – 
or even minutes. Our job is to deliver services to our 
users, so they can do their jobs more efficiently. With 
Tivoli, it was taking too long to recover user files. Users 
had to wait hours to get a restored file. Big restores of 
a major system, could take days. With HP Data 
Protector, we can restore files in minutes – and get 
users back up and running right away.” 
Guntofte cites additional benefits: “With HP Data 
Protector, we don’t have to spend time analyzing the 
backup environment every week to make sure that the 
backups are complete; so, we now have a backup 
environment with no errors. That releases technicians to 
do other work, and we can use the technicians’ time to 
build new servers, work on getting better response 
time, improving application performance, or 
optimizing the network.” 
The installation of the HP Data Protector solution went 
smoothly, with no problems, says Guntofte: “It was a 
turnkey installation. HP Services put together a 
packaged solution and delivered it ready to go from 
the factory.” 
Naestved capitalizes on their HP storage solution by 
turning to HP Services for a comprehensive and 
flexible storage support solution. HP Services provides 
the precise type and level of storage support enterprise 
customers require, delivering storage lifecycle services 
from design through integration and management. HP 
Services supports Naestved’s data infrastructure under 
a service contract that provides varying levels of 
response, depending on criticality. Naestved obtains 
13 hours x 5 days coverage for some servers and 
24x7 coverage for critical storage hardware. 
Looking forward to a more proactive role for IT 
The backup routine at Naestved includes nightly 
incremental backups and weekly full backups. The IT 
staff first conducts disk-to-disk backups to the HP 
StorageWorks VLS6510, and then they create disk-to­
tape copies and mount them on the EML E-Series Tape 
Library. They use one product, Data Protector, to back 
up to both disk and tape.  
Disk-to-disk backup with the VLS has cut backup time 
from ten or eleven hours each night to five or six hours, 
enabling backups well within the available window of 
time. The tape copies of the backups go to an off-site 
location for disaster-recovery purposes. 
Concludes Guntofte, “In the past we had lots of data 
islands. HP Data Protector is helping us merge the 
islands into a bigger, more efficient system. Backup is 
part of the service we provide to our users. It used to 
be a challenge, now it is not. Before, it took too much 
of our time. Now, our backups and restores are fast, 
efficient, reliable - and automated. With the HP 
solution, we can install and update backup clients 
faster. We estimate that we have reduced overall 
storage-management time by 30 percent – an excellent 
savings for us.
