Cisco IOS XE Denali 16.2.x and Cisco IOS XE represent the continuing evolution of the preeminent
Cisco IOS operating system. The Cisco IOS XE architecture and well-defined set of APIs extend the
Cisco IOS software to improve portability across platforms and extensibility outside the Cisco IOS

The software image installation process is now optimized:
The space required for installation is reduced—after you have
copied the.bin file to flash, only 20MB of additional space is
required to complete the installation.
The.bin file is automatically deleted after completion of installation.
The installation procedure you have to follow remains the same. See

Resilient Ethernet Protocol
(REP)
Support for REP, a Cisco proprietary protocol that provides an
alternative to Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to control network loops,
handle link failures, and improve convergence time in ring topologies.
REP controls a group of ports connected in a segment, ensures that the
segment does not create any bridging loops, and responds to link failures
within the segment. REP also supports VLAN load balancing.
