This technical white paper describes the best practices for the integrated Intrusion Detection System (IDS) on the MSM 
products. The intended audience for this white paper is HP Solution Architects and HP Technical Consultants, HP certified 
partners and end users.  

Different networks have different wireless security needs. For networks that only require intrusion detection, HP now offers 
an integrated solution. HP MSM firmware release 6.0 (v6.0) provides an out-of-the-box alternative to higher-end IDS/IPS 
solutions such as the HP RF Manager solution by using an existing, or new, HP MSM wireless network. 

A time-slicing approach allows controlled HP MSM Access Points (APs) to alternate between AP and sensor mode, 
simultaneously providing client services and IDS capabilities.  

Integrated IDS is available in controlled mode only. It is supported on the following APs:

  MSM410  

•

  MSM430 

•

  MSM460 

•

  MSM466 

•

  MSM466-R  

Integrated IDS is supported on the following controllers: 

•

  MSM720 

•

  MSM760 

•

  MSM765zl 

Note 
Integrated IDS requires that the controller (or team) has the Premium license installed. 

Integrated IDS includes the following capabilities: 

•

  Threat detection 

–

  Denial of Service threats 

–

  Wireless AP threats 

–

  Wireless client device threats 

•

  Alarm reporting 

–

  Generation of SNMP traps 

–

  Logging of messages to external syslog server 

Integrated IDS monitors the wireless environment using the radios on the controlled APs managed by the controller  
(or controller team).  

Three modes of operation for the radios are supported: 

•

  Dedicated IDS mode: In this mode of operation, the radio is dedicated to integrated IDS scanning. No client services are 

offered. By default, integrated IDS scans both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. (The administrator can limit the scanning to 
one band or the other).
