*SpencerLab, an internationally recognised leader 
in unbiased, Independent research and comparative 
analysis of digital imaging and printing system 
performance, performed tests comparing Original HP 
LaserJet toner cartridges with 8 major brands of non-HP 
toner cartridges to evaluate reliability and page quality 
performance. The results were revealing. During testing, 
HP toner cartridges outperformed the competition in 
both page quality and reliability.

HP delivered unmatched reliability
Manufacturers of non-HP cartridges may 

claim their products are just as reliable as of 

Original HP cartridges, but testing showed 

otherwise. More than 50% of the non-HP 

toner cartridges tested exhibited some kind 

of problem (Fig. 1). However, the Original 

HP LaserJet toner cartridges tested worked 

every time, with no reliability problems.

When your cartridge fails, you’ve thrown 

away money and time. Of the non-HP toner 
cartridges tested, 28% were dead on arrival 
or had an early end of life.

Business printing users were called upon 
to weigh in on the page quality appropriate 
for certain uses—including external and 
internal distribution. A page-quality scale 

was created based on their responses, 
and inspectors used it to evaluate prints 
during testing (Fig. 2). Based on that scale, 

SpencerLab determined that on average 
43% of the inspected pages produced by 

the tested non-HP toner cartridges were of 
limited or no use (Fig. 3).

But Original HP LaserJet toner cartridges 

delivered pages that were acceptable for all 
uses 95% of the time.

HP delivers quality prints that last
Not all toner is the same. The toner recipes 
in non-HP toner cartridges aren’t optimised 

for use in the HP printing system, which can 

compromise image quality and durability.

There’s more to the cost of a cartridge than 

sticker price. Reliable cartridges help keep 

your employees focused on business, rather 
than wasting time to deal with problem 
cartridges. And consistent page quality 
can help you avoid reprints—saving time, 

limiting wasted supplies and may reduce the 

cost of printing. 

Any savings with non-HP toner cartridges 

today can cost you tomorrow. Non-HP 

cartridges can cost up to twice as much 
over time than Original HP LaserJet toner 
cartridges when you take reprinting and 

reliability issues into account.
