IPX Setup   12-3
The following is a list of common SAP ser ver types:
NetBIOS
NetBIOS is a protocol that per forms tasks related to the Transpor t and Session layers of the OSI model. It can
operate over IPX using a special broadcast packet known as “IPX Packet type 20” to communicate with IPX
NetBIOS ser vers.
IPX spoofing
The Netopia R6000 Series has several IPX features designed to restrict the traffic on the dial-up link when the
unit is not sending or receiving IPX data. When the link is idle and a user is logged into a Novell ser ver, the
ser ver will send keep-alive packets to ensure that the user is still there. If the link is idle, the keep-alive packets
will be sent back to the ser ver by the locally connected Netopia R6000 Series as though they came back from
the user without bringing up the dial-up link.
SPX keep-alive packets are also treated in this manner. IPX RIP and SAP messages will not be sent if the link is
down. Together, these features enable the user to remain connected to a Novell ser ver or SPX peer without
bringing up the dial-up link, except to send and receive actual user data.
IPX setup screen
You will use the IPX Setup screen to configure the Ethernet side of the Netopia R6000 Series. The information
you enter controls how the router routes IPX traffic.
