Ensure that the connector on each end of the cable is fully seated.

Disconnect the tape drive from the host system, turn off the tape 
drive, and turn it on again to perform a POST (see

If you have a SCSI tape drive—remove all devices from the SCSI bus. 
Connect the tape drive directly to the host computer and terminate it 
for internal tape drives or
