The WinTarget Advanced Edition offers improved data protection through the Snapshots
feature by creating point-in-time copies of iSCSI disks. These point-in-time copies are
space efficient and can be used to quickly restore files and volumes in case of accidental
user deletion, overwrites or corruption resulting from a virus. A VSS Hardware Provider is
also an available option to integrate WinTargetís snapshot functionality into the Microsoft
Volume Shadow Service framework to allow centralized, server-free and LAN-free backups.
If your environment is not VSS aware, you can achieve centralized backup by using in
Target Advanced Edition - Data View feature. Data View allows you to take a snapshot of
iSCSI disks and mount those snapshots locally on the WinTarget server. These iSCSI
disks will appear as local disks so any backup software can be used to backup their content.
Data restoration is accomplished by mounting the iSCSI disks in read/write mode.
This document guides you through the process of installing, configuring and utilizing
storage devices created with WinTarget.
Network Architecture
The diagram below illustrates the network architecture used throughout this document. The
iSCSI network consists of a single initiator connected to a single WinTarget Server through a
Gigabit Ethernet network. It is highly recommended that the two computers are
interconnected using a Gigabit switch.
