Chapter 5 – Partitioning and Connecting to a Host
37
Automatic Partition Creation
The first time that the library starts up after installation, the BlueScale user interface
gives you the opportunity to automatically configure the library into a single partition,
using all of the library’s available resources. Using this partition auto-creation feature
simplifies configuring the library if you plan to use only one partition. If you plan to
create more than one partition, you can cancel the partition auto-creation and create
multiple customized partitions later.
Enabling SLS Partitioning
By default, the library supports using a single partition. You can add support for
additional partitions to your library by purchasing a Shared Library Services

(SLS)
virtualization activation key code from Spectra Logic. Using SLS, you can partition the
library logically, so that the partitioned library looks to the enterprise environment like
one or more physical libraries—one library per configured partition—each with its
own drives and media.
When SLS partitions are enabled, no external software or hardware tools are required
to manage mixed media within the library. Each partition has exclusive access to the
drives and chambers assigned to it. In addition, each partition can control the
transporter to move media within the partition. The library requires, at a minimum,
one partition.
To purchase SLS, you need your library’s Hardware ID. To determine the Hardware ID,
select Configuration > System. The System Setup screen appears (Figure 6).
