Enabling, Configuring, and Using Observatory
Understanding Observatory
The BlueScale Observatory application, available for purchase from Spectra Logic, lets
you to monitor and manage multiple Spectra Logic libraries from a single remote
location. Observatory is key-enabled, and arrives on a software CD for you to install on
your computer system.

Observatory monitors Spectra Logic tape libraries on a network by querying each
library’s status then displaying the results through a web browser connection to the
Remote Library Controller (RLC). The advanced monitoring and management functions
provided by Observatory allow users to see information remotely that is normally only
available on the library’s General Status and System Messages screens. This
functionality is a step above what is provided when accessing the library through the
Remote Library Controller (RLC).

Centralized Remote Management Observatory, which uses eXtensible Markup
Language (XML), allows users to see information remotely that is normally only
available on the library’s General Status and System Messages screens. This is a step
above the RLC feature that is included with the library, however, because users can
view the library’s functions in combination with those of multiple other Spectra Logic
libraries.

Automatic E-mail Alerts Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) allows users to receive
library status information in e-mail. When library messages are generated through the
LC, the library automatically sends e-mail notifications to selected users. Information
included in the notification consists of the number of the message, its severity, its
details, its remedy, and the time it was generated. Message types include Informational,
Error, Warning, and Fatal; users can configure the library to select which types of
messages are sent.

SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a widely used protocol for
monitoring the health and welfare of your library by using integrated alerts. To begin
monitoring the status of your library using SNMP, download MIB files from the Spectra

SSL SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is a security protocol created by Netscape that has
become an international Internet standard. Use Observatory’s SSL to exchange sensitive
information between the Spectra Logic T-series libraries and the RLC.

SSL technology is embedded in all popular browsers and engages automatically when
the user connects to a Web server that is SSL-enabled. Web sites using SSL indicate SSL
security with an address that begins with HTTPS. The S indicates a secure connection.
