Chapter 7 – Using the Library
55
Using Media Lifecycle Management
After you enable Media Lifecycle Management (see Configuring Media Lifecycle
Management
 on page 50) and l
oad Spectra Logic Certified MLM media and cleaning
cartridges into the library, BlueScale MLM writes the cartridge bar code information
and other information about the library to the cartridge’s memory chip and to the
library’s MLM database. You can then use BlueScale MLM to monitor the health of the
cartridges and generate a variety reports. If desired, you can save the reports to a USB
storage device or email them to a previously configured mail user.
Note:
Until a cartridge is loaded into a tape drive in the library the first time, it
does not appear on the Media Lifecycle Management reports.
If a new cartridge is write-protected when it is inserted into a drive, the
library cannot update the information on the cartridge’s memory chip.
In addition to generating reports, the MLM feature displays a Filled Capacity bar graph
on the General Status screen (Figure 17). This graph shows you the remaining
uncompressed storage capacity for the MLM-compatible media in the entire library or
in a specific partition. Click on Filled Capacity bar graph to view the Media Lifecycle
Management Report screen (Figure 18 on page 58).
Note:
Until a cartridge is loaded into a tape drive in the library the first time, its
capacity is not included on the Filled Capacity bar graph.
