Identifying a Malfunctioning QIP
A QIP handles all of the communication between the host and the attached
SCSI drives. It also passes robotic control commands from the host to the
library’s robotics and can queue drive commands to keep drives streaming
data for optimum drive performance. Most QIP “failures” can be traced to
a communication failure somewhere in the communication path. The
following table lists the two most common “symptoms,” with the
preferred resolution for each.
Refer to the Spectra T950 Assisted Self-Maintenance Guide for additional
information about identifying a malfunctioning QIP.
Symptom
Solution
The QIP shows “offline”
in the front panel library
interface, and the host can
no longer communicate
with the QIP or the drives
attached to it.
Reset the QIP as described in
. It will most often resume
functioning, which indicates that it experienced a communications
problem with the host. If this problem occurs frequently, locating the
source of the communications problem is the only way to permanently
resolve the issue. The source of the problem could be bad media, a
malfunctioning tape drive, a cable or HBA problem, or another program
or server interrupting communications. Setting up QIP tracing can help
identify the source of the problem. Do not replace the QIP.
If the QIP does not resume functioning after a reset, then it is possible
that a chip on the QIP failed or that there is another hardware problem.
Replace the QIP.
