MegaRAID SAS Controller BBU Replacement Procedure

High-Level Summary of the Replacement Steps:
1. Take the server offline from CDSM.
2. Issue the “init 0” command from the console.
3. Disconnect the power cords from the power supplies, remove the power supplies and
disconnect all the cables on the rear panel for physically replacing the 9261-8i MegaRAID
controller.
4. Open the chassis and remove the 9261-8i MegaRAID controller.
5. Remove the BBU from the 9261-8i MegaRAID controller.
6. Install the new BBU on the 9261-8i MegaRAID controller.
7. Replace the 9261-8i MegaRAID controller in the chassis.
8. Replace the SAS cables to the 9261-8i MegaRAID controller, replace the power supplies,
and the power cords
9. Reboot the server.

Procedure for removing the 9261-8i MegaRAID controller and
replacing the BBU:

1. In the CDSM, select Maintain/Server/Server Offload Enable
2. SSH as root to the device that is targeted for an upgrade. Stop database by issuing the
following commands:
a. as root, issue "
db_shutdown
"
b. make sure avsdb process shuts down, "
pgrep avsdb
" and “
netstat –an |grep
9999
” should return nothing
c. issue the “init 0” command
3. Inspect the server chassis and ensure all connecting cables are labeled, if fibers are in
use for streaming, ensure that TX/RX are marked by color or label. If any cables/fibers
are missing label, use temporary label to show near end interface

4. Power off the server, disconnect the power cords from the power supplies, remove the
power supplies and disconnect all the cables on the rear panel.
5. Place the chassis on a workstation and remove the top cover;
Note: Make sure you have an ESD strap on and you are properly grounded before

6. Unscrew the bracket of the 9261-8i MegaRAID controller card at slot 3 on the
CDE220/420, slot 1 on the CDE250/460/470.
7. Disconnect the mini SAS cable attached to the 9261-8i MegaRAID controller.
8. Remove 9261-8i MegaRAID controller from the chassis.
