The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a video interface standard designed to 

maximize the visual quality of digital display devices such as flat panel LCD 

computer displays and digital projectors. It was developed by an industry 

consortium, the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG). It is designed for 

carrying uncompressed digital video data to a display.  

It is partially compatible with the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 

standard in digital mode (DVI-D).

Some new DVD players, TV sets (including HDTV sets) and video projectors have 

DVI/HDCP connectors; these are physically the same as DVI connectors but 

transmit an encrypted signal using the HDCP protocol for copy protection.

HDMI 

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface is a compact audio/video connector interface for 

transmitting uncompressed digital streams. It represents a digital alternative to consumer 

analog standards such as Radio Frequency (RF) coaxial cable, composite video, S-Video, 

SCART, component video, and VGA.
By delivering crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically 

simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the highest-quality home theater 

experience.
HDMI connects digital audio/video sources such as Blu-ray Disc players, personal computers, 

video game consoles, and AV receivers to compatible digital audio devices, video monitors, 

and digital televisions (DTV). 
HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio 

on a single cable.

HDMI 1.2 provide a data rate up to 165 Mpixels/sec (4.95 Gbps)
HDMI 1.3 increases its single-link bandwidth to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps)

Analogue video, which represents information as a 

continuous flow of analogue data, is intended to be shown 

on a TV screen (based on the scanning principle). There 

are several standards for analogue video. The three main 

ones are:  PAL, NTSC, SECAM 

Digital video, which consists in coding the video in a 

succession of digital images.
