Caution:
If you have previously set up your WLAN using
the 3e-531AP devices as access points and you decide to change
the con fi g u ra tion to gateway mode, you will need to convert
the MAC ad dress es on each wireless device that has been set
up so they can be seen by the reconfi gured system. This is ac-
complished by the following procedure, done on each device
that was confi gured to use the 3e-531AP when the system was
set up as an access point system. Pull up a System Prompt
(“c:\” prompt, also called an MSDos prompt) on the wireless
device’s desktop. type: arp-d and hit return. This reconfi gures
the MAC address in the wire less device’s PC Card so that it is
now visible to the gate way.
Chapter 4: Gateway Confi guration
Introduction
Chapter 3 covered the default confi guration of the 3e-531AP Wireless
Access Point as an access point, for use as part of a host wired net work.
This chapter covers confi guration as a gate way.
If ad di tion al security for the wireless network is desired (dif fer en t-
i at ing it from the wired network to which it is connected), set it up in
gateway mode. Gateway mode takes advantage of some built-in “rout er”
func tions, such as the gateway’s ability to do Network Address Transla-
tion (NAT), providing private IP addresses for the wire less clients.
A 3e-531AP set up in gateway mode can initiate wireless com mu ni c-
a tions to the wired network but the wired network can’t initiate com mu -
ni ca tions to the wireless network unless a specifi c net work ad dress has
been assigned and the user on the wired network knows that address.
The illustration on the following page diagrams the difference.
