partnership and shared collaborations on research,
development, and testing. “Our Integrity-Oracle
environment is a perfect sweet spot of performance,
without breaking the bank,” Jalbert says.
In addition to performance gains, the IT consulting firm
resolved another issue: excessive heat in its computer
room. Jalbert explains, “When we monitored UPS
continuously for a few days after installing the Integrity
blade, we saw a sizable reduction in the current
being delivered to the computer room. We can expect
further heat reductions as we collapse other systems
on blades.” So far, the firm has migrated and retired
one AlphaServer and several Windows-based servers.
Additionally, with this small machine the staff could
cram up to ten times more computational power into
50 or so square feet of available space. “HP Integrity
blades are a true salvation in this direction,” Jalbert
comments.
As important, the firm is realizing lower costs related
to licenses and maintenance. Jalbert says, “When
I first saw the cost of the OpenVMS licenses, I
wondered if the figure was a mistake; it was incredibly
low. Then, we factored in the three-year maintenance
contract and saw that the cost of our HP solution
would come close to costing us zero. I realized then
that this would be the preferred solution for everything
going forward.”
HP OpenVMS advantages
Cost savings in tandem with the security, agility, and
reliability of HP OpenVMS clusters form a “big-time
solution,” according to Jalbert. He recalls only two
security patches in his 30 years of using OpenVMS
and acknowledges that high-velocity OpenVMS-based
computers run continuously—without any unplanned
downtime. “That is a stunning statement about the
operating system’s stability and high availability,”
Jalbert says.
Along with industry-leading, fault-tolerant capabilities,
OpenVMS has certain tools, including the Web Server
Suite for OpenVMS based on Apache, on which JCC
expects to build out additional Internet capabilities for
its applications. After the staff completes changes to
its software development model, the tools will enable
an environment that works reliably and predictably.
JCC also may leverage HP Integrity Virtual Machines
(Integrity VM) on OpenVMS when HP rolls out the
software in mid-2009. “Given our computer room
space problems, HP Integrity Virtual Machines on
OpenVMS offers an attractive model to carve out
partitions and test our products and multiple software
versions—without exploding our hardware platform,”
he says.
