Possible Cause
 Solution
Spark will not light
the pilot after
repeatedly pressing
the spark ignitor.
Air in the pilot supply line.
• Purge the line or start ignition several times.
No spark at pilot burner
• Check spark gap.
• Check wiring connections to ignitor.
• Check for spark in location along cable.
Valve.
• Replace the valve.
Over tightened
thermocouple interrupter.
• Replace the valve and thermocouple interrupter.
Receiver
• Replace the receiver and reset the receiver’s
code, refer to M

Pilot  is  lit  and
sparking stops. Valve
shuts off after 10 to
60  seconds.  Valve
does  not  operate
manually.
Note:  For  manual
operation  turn  the
valve  knob  to  the
manual
position
and  hold  the  safety
magnet
open
with  a  pen  for
approximately
60
seconds  (see  Figure
91).
Not
enough
voltage
generated
from
the
thermocouple  or  too  much
resistance in the circuit.
Note: To find which part of
the  circuit  is  causing  the
problem,  a  checklist  for
each  application  can  be
prepared  using  an  Excel
calculation  available  from
Mertik Maxitrol.
Possible  parts  are:  ON-
OFF  switch,  Temperature
switches,  Thermo  current
connections, Receiver.
• Use a digital multimeter set in the mV range
and measure the voltage by touching one test
lead to the metal body of the valve and the
other lead will go to the spade connector of the
thermocouple line (see Figure 82). The available
voltage must be at least 5mV.  Drop time can
be measured after the thermocouple is fully
heated; more than 15 seconds for the drop time
is good.
Thermocouple.
• Replace the thermocouple.
Low inlet pressure.
• Confirm the regulator’s pressure and sizing.
Replace if necessary.
Valve.
• Replace the valve. Do not over tighten the
thermocouple interrupter.
BV  Only:  Spill  switch  at
the  draft  hood  may  have
tripped.
• Correct cause of trip and reset switch.
