The scalable NAS solution powered by the HP
PolyServe File Serving Utility software combined the
benefits of NAS with the advantages of SAN, and cost
over 50 percent less than other NAS products
considered. Because the architecture treats the cluster
as a single NFS server, there was no need to divide or
replicate data among separate servers and no need to
assign clients manually to individual servers. “With the
HP PolyServe File Serving Utility solution, I can pay as I
grow,” says Aiyer, “I just plug in additional servers and
storage capacity as my operations need them. That is
critical when my user traffic is doubling every three
months!”
The File Serving Utility enables data sharing among all
servers, and greatly simplifies storage provisioning and
back-up procedures. With the File Serving Utility, the
cluster detects and takes prescriptive action to prevent
failures at the network, storage, server, and software
layers within the cluster. The File Serving Utility also
provides transparent fail-over of NFS sessions and
supports multi-path I/O (MPIO).
The symmetrical cluster file system gives MIO on-the-fly
scalability. Each individual server contributes
incremental performance to the Scalable NAS cluster.
No individual server can impose a bottleneck on
system performance. As MIO’s needs expand, they
can simply add more servers to the cluster or storage
arrays to the SAN, without service disruption.
"Bottom line – the HP PolyServe File Serving Utility
gives me flexibility,” says Aiyer. “Unlike the software
that goes into the expensive, ‘high-end’ NAS
appliances, the File Serving Utility is configurable,
doing what I want it to do – and doing it very well."
Music lovers are happy and costs are down
With the HP PolyServe-enabled NAS solution, MIO
users can now access audio files via any web server.
Multiple users who have mounted audio files via
different servers can use the same files simultaneously,
receiving the same results as if they were using a
single server.
MIO expects the NAS gateway’s performance to grow
proportionately with site traffic and double every three
months. The site architecture in total now handles
nearly 1.2 TB, and has the capacity to scale out to 2.5
TB.
A cost-sensitive project from the outset, the scalable
NAS solution saved MIO more than 50 percent in
capital expenditures, compared to competing NAS
solutions. To address increasing demands on their site,
MIO has the available capital to easily scale out their
architecture by adding low-cost, industry-standard
servers to the cluster, enhancing the site’s available
bandwidth. The HP PolyServe File Serving Utility
solution also introduced important advantages in terms
of manageability. Data replication is no longer
necessary, and MIO staff can change cluster and file
system configurations from a central point of control.
Concludes Aiyer, “With the HP PolyServe File Serving
Utility solution, system and storage management is
dramatically simply. All my content is in one place –
no more issues with replication or running out of
storage capacity.”
