Roswell Park Cancer Institute Improves
Storage Capacity and Application
Performance, Builds Cluster-based, High
Availability Infrastructure with HP Solution
HIGHLIGHTS
Goal: For the Roswell Park Cancer Institute
to build a disaster recovery system, archive
medical images, increase storage scalability,
improve application performance, and
archive email for easy retrieval and to
comply with government regulations.
Solution: Comprehensive HP system,
including two HP StorageWorks disk
arrays with Continuous Access EVA soft-
ware; a 10-terabyte HP StorageWorks
Medical Archive Solution (MAS); an HP
StorageWorks Integrated Archive
Platform (IAP); an HP Enterprise File
Services (EFS) Cluster Gateway; an HP
StorageWorks Cluster Extension (CLX),
and clustered HP ProLiant servers.
Results: Roswell Park Cancer Institute now
has a comprehensive solution that provides
improved, scalable archiving of medical
images and business data, better application
performance, and forms the backbone of
a disaster recovery plan. Emails can now
be more easily retrieved, and HIPAA and
other government regulations are being
met. Patient care has been improved, and
the institute will be able to attract better
researchers due to a new, leading-edge IT
infrastructure. The HP infrastructure allows
RPCI to be proactive rather than reactive
when it comes to change. The HP solution
has a projected, cumulative, five-year net
benefit of $7,530,619, driven by increased
IT and staff productivity, efficiency gains,
and decreased downtime. The ROI for the
project will be 107%, with a 22-month
payback period.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute, America’s
first cancer center, is the only upstate New
York facility to hold the National Cancer
Center designation of “comprehensive
cancer center” and to serve as a member of
the prestigious National Comprehensive
Cancer
Headquarters: Buffalo, NY
Industry: Health care
Employees: More than 2,700, including
227 physicians and scientists, and more
than 450 nurses
Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), America’s first cancer center, provides high-
quality care for cancer patients. RPCI is also a major cancer research center. In
order to provide high-quality care, and to remain on the forefront of research,
RPCI needs to have a world-class computing infrastructure.
Toward that end, the institute decided to significantly upgrade its storage and
archival infrastructure. It was looking for a solution that would improve storage
capacity and performance, archive medical images and business information,
be highly scalable, meet HIPAA and other government regulations, and offer
disaster recovery and business continuity.
RPCI chose two HP StorageWorks EVAs running Continuous Access EVA; a
10-terabyte HP StorageWorks Medical Archive Solution (MAS); an HP Storage -
Works Integrated Archive Platform (IAP); an HP Enterprise File Services (EFS)
Cluster Gateway; an HP StorageWorks Cluster Extension (CLX), and clustered
HP ProLiant servers

OBJECTIVE
BENEFITS ACHIEVED
Provide scalable storage  The HP solution easily keeps up with RPCI data growth, and can
for PACS and business
easily scale to handle the estimated 20 terabytes of new data RPCI
data
adds every year.
Easily retrieve data and
RPCI can quickly find email for legal discovery and for regulatory
email for HIPAA and
matters. Previously, it could have taken days to find a particular piece
legal discovery
of email; with RISS that same task takes only an hour.
Improve performance
Improvements in productivity, reliability, and efficiency will give RPCI a
and productivity
projected, cumulative, five-year net benefit of $7,530,619 and an ROI
of 107%, with a payback period of 22 months.
