Calibrating for custom halftone screens
To correct problems with color quality when using a halftone screen, such as too much
magenta in the printed image, make sure that the Fiery EXP6000/EXP5000 is calibrated for
the particular halftone screen you use. This is important if you expect to compare a
continuous tone page printed from a calibrated Fiery EXP6000/EXP5000 to a halftone
printed page.
Changing halftone screens usually modifies the color response of a printer. With most printers
that offer standard multiple halftone screens, ColorWise Pro Tools Calibrator lets you select
the halftone screen to calibrate. A measurement calibration set is maintained for each printer
color response that is produced by different halftones coupled with other parameters, such as
media and resolution. The best color is achieved when you specify a calibrated response and
its corresponding output profile by setting print options at print time.
However, when user-defined halftones are specified, the Fiery EXP6000/EXP5000 does not
have adequate information about the resulting color response. You must consider the halftone
screen for separate calibration and profiling.
When your custom halftone changes the color response of your printer, you need a custom
output profile. Perform the following custom profile creation procedure only once.
Use the following procedure to calibrate the Fiery EXP6000/EXP5000 for custom
halftone screens.

SCREENS
1 Determine the measurement instrument you use for calibration.
2 Open the CustomHalftonesCalibration folder on the User Software CD.
This folder contains images of the calibration pages for various instruments and page sizes.
If you print halftone screens only from Photoshop, open the Photoshop folder. Otherwise,
open the Other Applications folder.
3 Locate the image file that corresponds to the patch page for your instrument and paper size.
These images were prepared at the final sheet page size. In your application, place them using
no margins. Ignore warnings that the image may be clipped. Do not “color manage” these files
when you open or print them.
4 Open a blank document in the application you use for generating screened print jobs.
5 Place the image of the calibration pages into the document.
This document is now the custom calibration page.
6 Print this custom calibration page, using your application-specific halftone settings and
Fiery EXP6000/EXP5000 print option settings.
You must print with the CMYK Simulation Profile option set to Off, which produces an
uncalibrated patch page.
