perdata was the first German firm to receive the HP
Service Provider (SP) Certification, which provides
confirmation and recognition that a service provider
consistently delivers services based on industry best
practices, including those from the IT Infrastructure
Library (ITIL).
From the beginning, perdata relied exclusively on HP
infrastructure and services to meet its clients’ diverse
needs. Explains perdata Data Center Manager Holger
Maschke, “We regularly evaluate our choice of HP
infrastructure over other vendors. We stay with HP
because they have the range of solutions and services
we need to compete. With HP storage, servers and
software tools, we can tailor a solution to meet a
customer’s needs exactly.”
Storage growth presents greatest challenge –
and quick ROI
Maschke notes that among the many technology
changes he has witnessed over the years, “The
biggest difference we see is the increase in storage
demand. Our customers rely on powerful database
applications and enterprise-class management
solutions, which use and produce huge volumes of
data. We’re adding storage at a rate of about 15
terabytes per year, and we see no end in sight.”
perdata has always depended on HP storage arrays
to manage its clients’ data needs. The company
maintains a 72 TB Fibre Channel storage-area
network (SAN) that includes several XP and Enterprise
Virtual Array (EVA) systems. The most recent addition
to the SAN is an HP StorageWorks XP disk array,
which the firm devotes to critical production support.
Quality control, testing, development and data
migration chores fall to four EVA systems.
Maschke calculates an 18-month return on investment
(ROI) for the new XP disk array, primarily due to
savings on maintenance, energy consumption
and reduced space requirements—all part of
the company’s data center transformation. “The
StorageWorks XP array gives us just the right blend
of scalability, performance and availability,” Maschke
explains. “The no-single-point-of-failure design of the
StorageWorks XP gives us the always-on service that
we promise and our clients expect. Our utility and
hospital customers, in particular, demand the highest
level of availability and data security for their SAP and
other applications; XP allows us to deliver that.”
Storage Essentials helps optimize storage benefits
perdata implemented the HP Storage Essentials
Storage Resource Management (SRM) Enterprise
Edition Software suite. The system is tightly integrated
with HP Systems Insight Manager to provide a unified
view and consolidated management of server and
storage resources.
“We use HP Storage Essentials to document our
SAN environment, while improving capacity and
performance management,” explains Miroslav
Kolev, perdata’s Technical Administrator. “We like
the fact that anyone on our technology staff can use
Storage Essentials to display port usage or analyze
performance. It’s very easy to learn, even by non-
experts. Storage Essentials helps us to optimize our
storage use, which benefits our clients and helps make
us more profitable.”
perdata uses HP Data Protector software to automate
backup and recovery for its storage systems. Data
Protector supports multiple operating systems,
VMware, bare metal recovery (complete restoration)
“We like the fact that anyone on our technology staff
can use HP Storage Essentials to display port usage
or analyze performance. It’s very easy to learn, even
by non-experts. Storage Essentials helps us to optimize
our storage use, which benefits our clients and helps
make us more profitable.”
