Support of Dispersion-Shifted Single-Mode Fiber (ITU G.655 
and G.656)

This product bulletin describes the support and benefits of dispersion-shifted single-mode fiber specified in 

ITU G.655 and G.656 standards. These fibers are also referred to as nonzero dispersion-shifted fibers 

(NZDSF).

The most commonly deployed single-mode fiber cables are those defined in ITU G.652. These fibers are optimal for 

optical transmissions in the 1300-nm window and also used for transmissions in the 1550-nm window, including 

CWDM and DWDM applications. ITU added support for NZDSF in Recommendations G.655 and G.656. These 

fibers are advantageous for 1550-nm and WDM applications as their “zero dispersion” is close to the transmission 

wavelength, resulting in less chromatic dispersion cumulated along the optical path. 

All Cisco

®

 transceiver modules transmitting in the 1550-nm window and all Cisco CWDM and DWDM transceiver 

modules support links over ITU G.655 and G.656 cables.
