Information for the TCP/IP network administrator
 Use of DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a service that provides IPaddress assignment and mainte-
nance procedures.  The KN-304 can get IPinformation from the service.
There are two user-definable variables related with the DHCP functions. You can set up those variables
from [Setup TCP/IP] of [Network Administration]provided by the Web utility.
 Enable DHCP
  IP address in NOVRAM
a. If you select [Not enable DHCP], the KN-304 does not call for the DHCPservice.  If no IP address is
defined for the KN-304 or “Enable IP addressdefined” is OFF, the KN-304 attempts to get an IP address
by BOOTP requestor some other means.
b. If DHCP can be used and no IP address is defined for the KN-304 or[IP address in NOVRAM] is OFF,
the KN-304 calls for the DHCP when resetor power has turned on.
c. If DHCP can be used but an IP address is defined for the KN-304 and[IP address in NOVRAM] is ON,
the KN-304 gets IP information from NVRAMand does not use DHCP service.
Both of the options [Enable DHCP] and [IP address in NOVRAM] are ON by default (employed at shipment
time).  In this case, if the IP identificationinformation stored in NVRAM is not available, the KN-304 gener-
ates a DHCPrequest.
When DHCP can be used and the default values are set for the KN-304, itis needed to set up
(reserve) so that the KN-304’s IP address be usedcontinually on the DHCP server, because
otherwise the same address might begiven to other hosts.
 Naming by WINS
Use of WINS for the KN-304
Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) allows registering the current IP address and NetBIOS name to
the KN-304.  A client who wishes to communicate with the printer can use the WINS server to match the IP
address and NetBIOS name.  For most users, it is easier to remember the printer’s NetBIOS name than the
IP address.
To use WINS for the KN-304, it is needed to enter the IP address of the WINS server by “TCP/IP Setup” of
the Web utility.
Setting for the WINS server
You set up the DHCP server to provide the KN-304 with WINS server information automatically.  Otherwise
you can enter the required information in “TCP/IP Setup” of the KN-304.  See the instruction manual of the
DHCP server for details of automatic setup for the DHCP server.
Perform the following steps in order that the WINS server should work for the KN-304.
