Figure 2. Administrator GUI monitoring logs.
Automated Data Management. Efforts to
keep available storage capacity at an
acceptable level are a persistent battle
requiring many hours of an
administrator’s time. With BrightStor
HSM, those hours can be nearly
eliminated.
•  Policy Driven. By setting watermarks,
file aging and other policies, the
administrator fully controls the data
migration activity. BrightStor HSM uses
those watermarks and policies to
transparently migrate the seldom-to-
never accessed files to a secondary
storage tier.
•  Reduce Capacity Requirements.
The resulting space created can then
be utilized by the "working set" of files.
•  Transparent Migration. When users
access files that were previously
migrated, BrightStor HSM quickly and
transparently retrieves files from the
secondary storage tier and restores
them to their original location.
•  Set Global Policy. From the Rules /
Policies tab, the administrator can set
schedules for migration and deletion,
scanning intervals, watermarks,
notifications and filters for files that
should not be migrated. These policies
apply for the entire server
•  Monitoring. Under the Monitor tab,
administrators can view Activity /
Warning, Errors, Migrations,
DeMigrations and Deletes logs. A
graphical view of capacity utilization by
volume over time is also shown
Simple Administration. The BrightStor
HSM is managed through an easy to use
Administrator GUI which can be installed
locally on each server or remotely,
managing all servers in the environment.
A tabbed layout eases navigation
between functions and default values
provide immediate out-of-box usability.
Storage Virtualization. BrightStor HSM
turns any supported server volume into
an infinite storage resource for storing
your crucial data. Migration is managed
automatically based on organizationally
defined rules and policies. All directories
remain on the primary server volumes, so
users can find their files exactly where
they placed them.
•  Migration / Deletion Rules. The
Sources tab allows the administrator to
set rules for what files should be
migrated based on name or file type,
location and age since modification or
last access. Directories and
subdirectories can be included or
excluded as appropriate and migration
targets specified. Each server can
have an unlimited number of policies.
Register Servers. BrightStor HSM
servers are registered by entering their IP
address, browsing the network or servers
with BrightStor HSM installed can be
discovered automatically.
•  Target Devices. Each migration policy
contains the target for the migrated
files. Multiple policies and multiple
servers can share a single target.
