With the need to rapidly deliver new services, cope with massive data growth,
and contain costs, cloud service providers are looking for more efficient ways to
store, manage, and protect their (and their customers’) data. Intelligent storage
designs based on Intel® Xeon® processors provide leadership performance and
performance per watt and can handle the most demanding storage workloads such
as data de-duplication and compression. However, certain lightweight, low-touch,
cloud storage—such as cold storage—can sometimes be hosted more efficiently
on a larger number of smaller storage platforms for improved power efficiency.

This second-generation, 64-bit system-on-a-chip
(SoC) integrates a variety of I/O interfaces to enhance
connectivity in storage applications while helping to
reduce board real estate and platform BOM costs. Four
GbE ports, two SATA 2 ports, four SATA 3 ports, and 4
USB 2* ports are all included to provide connectivity
to the network as well as to the storage media. Up to
16 lanes of PCI Express* Gen 2.0 are also provided for
expansion. For minimally accessed cold storage, Intel
Atom C2000 processors provide the performance and
power optimizations to meet rack level constraints.
Up to 50 percent lower power and 5.2x better
performance/watt than previous generation.
