ACK
Acknowledgment of communication
Channel
A group of characteristics such as transmit/receive 
frequency pairs, radio parameters, and encryption 
encoding
Control Channel
In a trunking system, one of the channels that is used 
to provide a continuous, two-way/data 
communications path between the central controller 
and all radios on the system
Conventional
Typically refers to radio-to-radio communications, 
sometimes through a repeater; does not use a 
trunking (controller) system (See Trunking)
Dispatcher
An individual who has radio system management

Federal Communications Commission
Hang Up
Disconnect
Landline Caller
Someone communicating through the public 
telephone system
Page
A one-way alert, with audio and/or display messages
PTT
Push-To-Talk - the PTT switch engages the transmitter 
and puts the radio in transmit (send) operation when 
pressed
Radio-To-Landline
Communicating from a portable/mobile radio 
through the telephone system
Repeater
A conventional radio feature, where you talk through 
a receive/transmit facility (repeater), that re-transmits 
received signals in order to improve communications 
range and coverage
RF
Radio Frequency
Squelch
The muting of audio circuits when received signal 
levels fall below a pre-determined threshold
Standby
An operating condition whereby the radio’s speaker is 
muted but still continues to receive data
Talkgroup
An organization of radio users who communicate 
with each other
Trunking
The automatic sharing of communications paths 
between a large number of users (See Conventional)
Zone
A grouping of channels
