Market: Automotive
Application Description: Protect brake calipers and rotors from becoming
corroded on the front wheel
Key Application Requirements
Because of new designs and fancier rims, these parts are now exposed to the
elements. A major OEM discovered premature rusting and deterioration of the
brake rotors on new cars. The problem was occurring during final delivery and
after sitting on the dealership lot. Road spray, rain and other general weather
elements were to blame. The tape must remove cleanly by hand.
Benefits/Advantages To Customer
Protects brake pads and rotors: Use of 3M
Protective Tape YR451U72B
resulted in significant reduction in rust formation on the brake pads and rotors.
Adhesive Removes Cleanly: Tape YR451U72B has a low tack adhesive that
removes cleanly. UV resistant backing allows for clean removal from substrate
due to no residue from UV degradation.
Easy to remove: The material is translucent with a blue tint. Because the
material is translucent, the workers can see through to the part. Because it is
tinted blue, it can be easily identified to remove at the dealer.
Reduces Rework: The 3M Protective Tape removes cleanly and no rework is
required to remove the tape. This is due to the dual protection from sunlight in
both the 3M film backing and the adhesive system.
Reduces labor costs: Because the 3M Protective Tape removes cleanly, the
customer was able to eliminate the person removing the tape after storage
or transport
Outdoor storage: The 3M Protective Tapes offer UV protection allowing
wheels with the protective tape to be stored outdoors for up to 3 months.
