Modify existing vent system if necessary to achieve the best drying performance. Only rigid or flexible metal vent shall be used for exhausting.11If this is a new vent system11Use a heavy metal vent. Do not use plastic or metal foil vent.114" (102 mm) heavy metal exhaust vent and clamps must be used.11Vent products can be purchased from your dealer or by calling Whirlpool Service. For more information, see the “Assistance or Service” section.11Rigid metal vent11For best drying performance, rigid metal vents are recommended.11Rigid metal vent is recommended to avoid crushing and kinking.11Flexible metal vent12Flexible metal vents are acceptable only if accessible for cleaning.12Flexible metal vent must be fully extended and supported when the dryer is in its final location.12Remove excess flexible metal vent to avoid sagging and kinking that may result in reduced airflow and poor performance.12Do not install flexible metal vent in enclosed walls, ceilings, or floors.12The total length of flexible metal vent should not exceed 7¾ ft. (2.4 m).12Elbows1245° elbows provide better airflow than 90° elbows.12Good Better12Clamps12Use clamps to seal all joints.12Exhaust vent must not be connected or secured with screws or other fastening devices that extend into the interior of the duct and catch lint. Do not use duct tape.12Exhaust12A and B: Recommended hood styles. C: Acceptable hood style.12An exhaust hood should cap the vent to keep rodents and insects from entering the home.12Exhaust hood must be at least 12" (305 mm) from the ground or any object that may be in the path of the exhaust (such as flowers, rocks, or bushes, snow line, etc.).12Do not use an exhaust hood with a magnetic latch.12Plan Vent System12Choose your exhaust installation type12Optional exhaust installations12Alternate installations for close clearances13Over-the-Top Installation:13Part Number 439602813Periscope Installation (For use with dryer vent to wall vent mismatch):13Part Number 4396037 - 0" (0 mm) to 18" (457 mm) mismatch13Part Number 4396011 - 18" (457 mm) to 29" (737 mm) mismatch13Part Number 4396014 - 29" (737 mm) to 50" (1.27 m) mismatch13Special provisions for mobile home installations13Determine vent path13Select the route that will provide the straightest and most direct path outdoors.13Plan the installation to use the fewest number of elbows and turns.13When using elbows or making turns, allow as much room as possible.13Bend vent gradually to avoid kinking.13Use the fewest 90° turns possible.13Determine vent length and elbows needed for best drying performance13Use the following vent system chart to determine type of vent material and hood combinations acceptable to use.13NOTE: Do not use vent runs longer than those specified in the Vent system chart.13Exhaust systems longer than those specified will:13Shorten the life of the dryer.13Reduce performance, resulting in longer drying times and increased energy usage.13Vent system chart13Number 90º elbows13Type of vent13Box /louvered hoods13Angled hoods13013Rigid metal1364 ft (20 m)1358 ft (17.7 m)13113Rigid metal1354 ft (16.5 m)1348 ft (14.6 m)13213Rigid metal13313Rigid metal13413Rigid metal13Install Vent System131. Install exhaust hood. Use caulking compound to seal exterior wall opening around exhaust hood.132. Connect vent to exhaust hood. Vent must fit inside exhaust hood. Secure vent to exhaust hood with 4" (102 mm) clamp.133. Run vent to dryer location. Use the straightest path possible. See “Determine vent path” in “Plan Vent System.” Avoid 90º turns. Use clamps to seal all joints. Do not use duct tape, screws, or other fastening devices that extend into the ...13Install Leveling Legs131. To avoid damaging the floor, use a large flat piece of cardboard from the dryer carton. Place cardboard under the entire back edge of the dryer.132. Firmly grasp the body of the dryer (not the console panel). Gently lay the dryer on the cardboard. See illustration.143. Examine the leveling legs. Find the diamond marking.144. Screw the legs into the leg holes by hand. Use a wrench to finish turning the legs until the diamond marking is no longer visible.145. Place a carton corner post from dryer packaging under each of the 2 dryer back corners. Stand the dryer up. Slide the dryer on the corner posts until it is close to its final location. Leave enough room to connect the exhaust vent.14Connect Vent141. Using a 4" (102 mm) clamp, connect vent to exhaust outlet in dryer. If connecting to existing vent, make sure the vent is clean. The dryer vent must fit over the dryer exhaust outlet and inside the exhaust hood. Check that the vent is secured to e...142. Move dryer into its final location. Do not crush or kink vent.143. Once the exhaust vent connection is made, remove the corner posts and cardboard.14Connect Inlet Hose (Steam Models)141. Turn cold water faucet off and remove washer inlet hose.142. Remove old rubber washer from inlet hose and replace with new rubber washer provided. If space permits, attach the brass female end of the “Y” connector to the cold water faucet.14NOTE: If “Y” connector can be attached directly to cold water faucet, go to Step 6. If “Y” connector cannot be attached directly to the cold water faucet, the short hose must be used. Continue with Step 3.143. Attach short hose to cold water faucet. Screw on coupling by hand until it is seated on faucet.144. Using pliers, tighten the couplings with an additional two-thirds turn.14NOTE: Do not overtighten. Damage to the coupling can result.145. Attach “Y” connector to brass male end of small hose. Screw on coupling by hand until it is seated on connector.146. One end of the long hose has a wire mesh strainer inside the coupling. Attach this end to the “Y” connector.147. Attach washer cold inlet hose to other end of “Y” connector. Screw on coupling by hand until it is seated on connector.14A. Inlet to cold water148. Using pliers, tighten the couplings an additional two-thirds turn.14NOTE: Do not overtighten. Damage to the coupling can result.149. Attach other end of long hose to fill valve at bottom of dryer back panel. Screw on coupling by hand until it is seated on fill valve connector.1410. Using pliers, tighten the coupling an additional two-thirds turn.14NOTE: Do not overtighten. Damage to the coupling can result.1411. Check that the water faucets are on.1412. Check for leaks around “Y” connector, faucet, and hoses.14Level Dryer15Complete Installation151. Check that all parts are now installed. If there is an extra part, go back through the steps to see which step was skipped.152. Check that you have all of your tools.153. Dispose of/recycle all packaging materials.154. Check the dryer’s final location. Be sure the vent is not crushed or kinked.155. Check that the dryer is level. See “Level Dryer.”156. Remove the blue film on the console and any tape remaining on the dryer.157. Wipe the dryer drum interior thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove any dust.158. Read “Dryer Use.”159. For power supply cord installation, plug into a grounded outlet. For direct wire installation, turn on power.15Steam Models Only:1510. Be sure the water faucets are on.1511. Check for leaks around “Y” connector, faucet, and hoses.1512. Pull the lint screen straight up. Roll lint off the screen with your fingers. Do not rinse or wash screen to remove lint. Wet lint is hard to remove.92. Push the lint screen firmly back into place.9IMPORTANT:9Do not run the dryer with the lint screen loose, damaged, blocked, or missing. Doing so can cause overheating and damage to both the dryer and fabrics.9If lint falls off the screen into the dryer during removal, check the exhaust hood and remove the lint. See “Venting Requirements.”9As needed cleaning9To wash91. Roll lint off the screen with your fingers.92. Wet both sides of lint screen with hot water.93.
