Problem Solving to the System Component Level
The key to success when trou bles hooting the system is to isolate the pro blem to a sp ecific system
compo nen t. The first step is to compare what the s ystem is doing to what it shou ld b e doing . Because a
startup problem can usually be attributed to a single co mponent, it is mo re efficient to is olate the pro blem
to a subsystem rather than trou blesh oot each s eparate comp onent in the system.

The switch consists of the following sub systems:
•
Power supply —In clud es th e p ower sup ply and power sup ply cooling . (See the
.)
•
Fan assembly system—Th e chas sis fan assembly shou ld o perate wh enever system p ower is on.
Usually, it continu es to operate even when the env iron mental monitor s huts down the system
b ecau se of an overtemperature or overvoltag e condition. (It will shut down for a power supp ly
sh utdown .) You sh ould be able to h ear the fan ass embly to determine whether or not it is operating.
If the FAN LED is orange an d y ou determine that the fan assembly is n ot operating, y ou should
immediately contact a custo mer s ervice representative. There are no ins tallation ad justments th at
y ou can mak e if the fan assembly does not fu nctio n prop erly at the in itial startup .

Identifying Startup Problems
When you connect the power cord s to th e Catalyst 490 0M s witch, follow these steps:
Step 1
Flip the p ower switches to th e on pos ition (AC powered systems only).
Step 2
Verify that power is available to the p ower supp lied from the s ite AC o r DC source. Flip breakers and
fuses if necessary.
fuses if necessary.
Step 3
Listen for the system fan assembly. If you do not immediately hear the sys tem fan as sembly begin to
o perate, see
o perate, see
Step 4
If you d etermin e that th e power su pplies are fu nctio ning normally and that th e fan assemb ly is faulty,
contact a customer s ervice rep resen tative. If th e sys tem fan assembly do es no t fun ction prop erly at initial
startup, th ere are no installation adjustments that yo u can make.

LED Readings
LEDs indicate all system states in the startu p sequence. By check ing the LEDs, yo u can determine when
and wh ere the system failed in the startup seq uen ce. To check the LEDs, follow th ese step s:
