User Guide
Note: If a range of text is selected, you can’t kern the text manually. Instead, use tracking.
If you’re adjusting the kerning manually, commit changes to the type layer.
To adjust tracking
Select the type you want to adjust.
In the Character palette, do one of the following:
•
Enter a numeric value in the Tracking
 text box.
•
Choose a numeric value from the Tracking pop-up menu.
•
Position the pointer over the Tracking icon and drag the scrubby slider
 to the left or right.
To adjust horizontal or vertical scale
Horizontal scale and vertical scale specify the proportion between the height and width of the type. Unscaled
characters have a value of 100%. You can adjust scale to compress or expand selected characters in both width and
height. Scaling distorts the type, so it is generally preferable to use a font that is designed as condensed or expanded,
if one is available.
Select the type.
Enter a new percentage for Horizontally Scale
 or Vertically Scale
 in the Character palette.
To shift the baseline
Baseline shift controls the distance of type from its baseline, either raising or lowering the selected type to create
superscripts or subscripts. Shifting the baseline is especially useful when you’re hand-setting fractions or adjusting
the position of picture fonts.
Select the type that you want raised or lowered.
In the Character palette, enter a value for Baseline Shift
. A positive value moves horizontal type above
and vertical type to the right of the baseline; a negative value moves type below or to the left of the baseline.
Default baseline shift (left) and baseline shift of 10 points (right)
