1. An operator connected to the Font Reserve Server drags a job folder containing fonts to the
Sets area of the Font Reserve Client. Font Reserve locates all the fonts within that folder, and
adds them to the Font Reserve Server. Because the operator dropped the folder into the Sets
area of the Client, Font Reserve automatically creates a set for the job while adding the fonts.
2. When the fonts are added, the operator names the set with the job name or job number in
order to clearly identify the set with the job.
3. The operator shares the job’s set with the Production workgroup. At that moment, all users in
the Production workgroup can see the new set and access the fonts immediately.
Adding fonts in this manner ensures that all users working on a particular job are using the
identical set of fonts—which speeds workflow and prevents costly errors. Remember that while
fonts are being added, you’re receiving all the benefits of Font Reserve’s database technology:
Fonts are checked for corruption, bitmap and outline files are matched up, true duplicates are
weeded out, and important information about the fonts is extracted and added to the Font
Reserve Server Database. Once fonts are added, you can tag them with custom keywords to
indicate their projects, clients, etc.
Activating Fonts
When a user activates a font, Font Reserve Server downloads the font to the client workstation,
then activates it on that machine. On Mac OS X, fonts are activated automatically as documents
are opened in most applications, and fonts can be activated for Classic applications as well. Fonts
are downloaded to the local workstation rather than activated directly on the server for the
following reasons:
•  Mounted Server: To activate fonts directly from the server, the client machines would need to
keep the server volume constantly mounted. This can cause a multitude of problems as well as
a potential security breach.
•  Network Traffic: Fonts activated over the network tend to cause a great deal of network traffic
as the Mac OS, the print driver or other applications on the client machines need to access the
font data. This “chatty” behavior can interfere with optimal network performance.
