server. The client-server architecture ensures that all users start with and continue to use the same
fonts—the fonts that the administrator gives them permission to use.
Font Reserve Server—combined with Font Sense™ technology that uniquely identifies the fonts
required by a document and then activates those fonts—offers promise for an automated workflow.
Often, the seamless movement of a job through a scripted workflow is halted by font problems
that require human attention. The twin benefits of Font Reserve Server and Font Sense guarantee
that the right fonts will be in the right place at the right time so jobs can flow automatically.
How Font Reserve Server Works
Font Reserve Server is based on the same database technology and architecture as Font
Reserve Single User. Font Reserve Server extends the capabilities of Font Reserve to allow
multiple users to share, access, activate, and use fonts from a single source. Employing
an ODBC-compliant SQL database architecture, the server manages the entire library of
fonts owned or used by a workgroup, whether it’s a handful or a few hundred people.
Font Reserve Server runs on Windows NT 4.0 (workstation or server), Windows 2000/2003
(professional or server), and Mac OS X (desktop or server) serving fonts to Macintosh
clients. All communications between the Font Reserve Server and the Font Reserve Clients
are TCP/IP-based, so there is no file-sharing overhead. The Font Reserve Database contains
the original font files and all the information about the fonts and resides on the server. The
database stores all the information you need about fonts: name, kind (OpenType, PostScript,
TrueType, etc.), foundry, family, class (Serif, Script, Modern, etc.), version, kerning, and
glyph information. Users have access to all this information through the Font Reserve Client,
allowing them to easily locate, activate and deactivate fonts directly from the server.
Users and Groups
Font Reserve Server is designed according to true client-server principles, incorporating users,
groups, and permissions to control access to fonts. The server is maintained by a systems
administrator—working remotely or on site—who has the ability to configure users and workgroups
to create a system that is as restrictive or as open as necessary. Various permission levels allow
different types of users the access they need. For example, the administrator may give the
