No damage will occur to the instrument if you leave it charging for 
long periods, i.e. during the weekend. 
12.3.2. Extending Battery Operating Time 
Charging the batteries when they are not completely empty, reduces the battery 
operating time. To keep the batteries in optimal condition, observe the following 
guidelines:

Operate the instrument on batteries until the 
 symbol appears at the top of 
the screen. This indicates that the batteries are very low and that they need to 
be recharged. 
Operating time will be reduced if the instrument is used or handled at temperatures 
that differ from the recommended values. 
12.3.3. Dimming the Backlight 
At power-up the screen has a high bright display. 
To save battery power, the screen has an economic brightness when operated on 
the battery pack (no power adapter connected). When you connect the power 
adapter, the screen automatically changes to maximum brightness. 
If you have not pressed a key for at least five minutes, the backlight goes down to low 
level.
