About This Guide 
Introduction 
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for upgrading a Cisco Digital 
Broadband Delivery System (DBDS) to System Release 2.5/3.5 Service Pack 1 (SR 
2.5/3.5 SP1). Sites that use this guide to upgrade must currently support SR 2.5/3.5.  
The software installed using this guide is provided in the form of CDs. This is not a 
UniPack upgrade guide. 
 
 
Audience 
This guide provides Cisco field service engineers and system operators with 
instructions to install this service pack. 
 
Read Me 
Please read this entire guide before beginning the upgrade. If you are uncomfortable 
with any of the procedures, contact Cisco Services for assistance. 
Important:  Complete all of the procedures in this guide in the order in which they 
are presented. Failure to follow all of the instructions may lead to undesirable 
results. 
 
Required Skills and Expertise 
System operators or engineers who upgrade the DBDS system to System Release 
2.5/3.5 SP1 need the following skills: 
 
Advanced knowledge of UNIX  
Experience with the UNIX vi editor. Several times throughout the system 
upgrade process, system files are edited using the UNIX vi editor. The UNIX 
vi editor is not intuitive. The instructions provided in this guide are no 
substitute for an advanced working knowledge of vi  
The ability to review and edit cron files 
 
Extensive DBDS system expertise  
The ability to identify files that are unique to the site being upgraded 
The ability to add and remove user accounts
