Overview

Extended Care is a middleware platform that enables unified communication capabilities within a telehealth
workflow across diverse locations, endpoints and networks, connecting people to improve efficiency and quality of
care. At its core, Extended Care provides a single API layer with enhanced far-end camera control and virtual
waiting room capabilities to enrich native Cisco collaboration capabilities. It transforms the clinician experience by:
●
Unifying communication infrastructure components and devices
●
Simplifying workflows
●
Empowering high-quality, interactive visual communications and collaboration
Patients and remote users outside your clinics or healthcare facilities can access Epic’s MyChart application, while
clinicians can leverage Epic’s Hyperspace application. Both application workflows are integrated with Extended
clinicians can leverage Epic’s Hyperspace application. Both application workflows are integrated with Extended
Care to support multiple telehealth use cases. After authenticated by electronic medical records (EHR), the first
party to join the telehealth session (patient or remote clinician) enters a waiting room provided by Extended Care.
When the second party joins, the virtual video session is established as shown in Figure 1.

This document describes the security features in Extended Care and how those features relate to delivery of video
capabilities through an Epic EHR telehealth workflow. It is the responsibility of the customer to assure that any
other required security measures are implemented (for example, securing data sent to a printer or protecting
passwords).
Web Service Delivery and Security
In collaboration with Epic, Cisco has designed a web service in Extended Care that uses Epic FDI and Dynamic
links to integrate Cisco video with Epic Hyperspace and MyChart Web telehealth workflows. This secure web
service sends the schedule and visit information through an encrypted HTTPS message from the Epic EHR system
to the Extended Care server which in turn sends a command to the Cisco Unified Communications Manager
servers to launch the video session using Cisco Jabber
®
SDK and Remote Expert Mobile APIs. The parameters in
the web service are encrypted using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Communication between Extended
Care and Cisco UCM use encryption and security standards inherent in the related API tool kits.
