Appendix C – Transmitter Power Adjustment

The UHF Desktop Transmitter offers a full 2 watts of power output to deliver
considerable range and is shipped from the factory at the full power setting as a
default.  The transmitter also offers an internal adjustable power setting controller
to best exploit these range capabilities (Fig. 11.)

control showing reduced power (low; 100mW) to full power (high; 2W) power

Setting Power for use with Out-Of-Range (OOR)
When implementing the OOR feature with the Glowster or CommPass pagers,
JTECH recommends initially adjusting the transmitter power to the lowest power
setting (full CCW – see above), based on the transmitter having shipped at the
default 2 watt high power setting.  Once adjusted to minimum power, to increase
the overall range, adjust the power upward (turn power screw to the right) in
small increments until achieving the desired range (before the OOR alert is
observed.)  In almost all cases, very little power will be required to effectively
utilize the OOR feature.  Area coverage and range estimates for the UHF
Desktop transmitter are depicted in the chart below.  Transmitter location and
building construction will have a significant impact on range.  Site specific testing
is required to optimize coverage area.

NOTE: It is possible to reduce the power output below the lowest (100mW) setting to achieve
very short range with the OOR feature by inserting an attenuator between the transmitter antenna
port and the wire antenna.  For example, a 6dB attenuator will reduce the power output at the
lowest power setting by approximately half.  Please consult JTECH Customer Care to attempt to
achieve very short range limits in conjunction with the OOR feature.
Under no circumstances should the transmitter be operated without the
antenna as this will void the warranty and may damage the transmitter unit.
