d) Deleting Hard Disc
The copy station can also delete hard discs. Different deletion methods are available:
Deleting the table of contents
Only the hard disc’s table of contents is deleted. The data are retained entirely and can usually
be recovered completely with suitable software.
If you want to sell a hard disc, for example, you should not use this deletion method
for safety reasons!
Overwriting the entire hard disc
This deletion method overwrites all sectors of the hard disc once with random data. Because
of this, the deletion process takes some time depending on hard disc capacity.
The data usually cannot be recovered and are lost completely!
Multiple overwriting the entire hard disc
This deletion method overwrites every hard disc sector three times in sequence. First, every
sector is overwritten with “0x00” (1), then with “0xFF” (2) and last with random data (3).
Because of this, the deletion process takes many hours depeding on hard disc capacity!
The data usually cannot be recovered anymore after overwriting 3 times and are
lost completely!
This deletion mode should only be used if sensitive data are to be deleted to use
the hard disc for different purposes, because it is very time-consuming.
The display describes this deletion method as “DoD Erase”, with “DoD” meaning
“U.S.A. Department of Defense”.
