St Laurence’s College saves AU$24,000
a year on support costs with an
HP ProCurve solution
St Laurence’s College is a Catholic college for boys
in the Archdiocese of Brisbane, Australia. Located
on a large campus in heritage listed buildings,
the college has 150 support staff and teachers
educating 1,400 students from Year Five to Year 12.
The college recently embarked on a ‘connected
classroom’ strategy, which involved refurbishing
its classrooms, providing teachers with computers
connected to interactive whiteboards and giving
students access to lessons via laptop computers.
However, these developments needed sound
networking. The college network was already
overloaded and unreliable. The school IT
department already faced significant amounts of
trouble shooting and connecting the new equipment
was set to make the situation worse.
Objective
St Laurence’s College, Brisbane, needed
to build an integrated wireless and wired
network with lower running costs to support
new teaching methods.
Approach
The college implemented a complete HP
ProCurve network. High performance
Gigabit Ethernet was deployed to classrooms
and a campus-wide wireless Local Area Network
(LAN) is also under development.
IT improvements
• The project has enabled multimedia-based
classroom teaching.
• Network administration has been simplified
and scalability has been improved.
• Solution is being extended throughout the
campus with wireless LAN.
Business benefits
•  Network support costs have been reduced by
AU$24,000 (approximately US$22,000).
•  Students have faster access to teaching
applications for an improved learning
experience.
•  Growing student numbers can be easily
supported.
