The Optional Expander
You can use the Unifier as you would your other
remote controls. It transmits very powerful line-of-sight
output using infrared light commands (invisible to the
naked eye). When you point the Unifier at the
components, expect the range to be between 30 and
50 feet. When the remote is not pointed in the general
direction of the components, the range will vary
(depending on reflective surfaces, lighting, etc.).
However, the Unifier also sends radio signals in
every direction. By purchasing the optional Expander
(a radio receiver), you can operate your equipment
with the Unifier 50 to 100 feet away (through walls,
doors, cabinets, inside or outside). Since the
Expander picks up the Unifier's radio signals from
any direction, regardless of distance, the Unifier
doesn’t have to be pointed!
Nothing has to be done to the Unifier for this
feature to work. Every time you press a button on the
Unifier, it sends both a standard infrared command
AND a radio signal. If you install the Expander kit, the
MRF-100 will receive the Unifier’s radio signals and
translate them into the infrared commands that control
your components.
Note: The Unifier's radio signals will not control
components directly. You must have an Expander to
receive the Unifier's radio signals. Components
that came with "no pointing" radio remote controls cannot
be operated by the Unifier unless the component can
be switched to standard infrared control via its internal
menus. Some remote control ceiling fans are radio only and
cannot be operated by the Unifier.
