Compudyne’s VMs are set up in a failover cluster so
if a physical node fails, clients don’t experience any
interruptions. “This is a great improvement over the
past. Now if we have a physical node fail, everything
just keeps trucking along,” says Simonson. “Before,
we had to scurry for parts if a server failed. This
has really cut down on time it takes to restore from
backups—from days to hours.”

When Compudyne moved to the ProLiant DL380
G6 Servers, they also moved to HP StorageWorks
MSA2324i iSCSI storage for their virtual cluster,
which they manage using Microsoft Hyper-V. “Clients
reported to our service department that performance
seemed ‘snappier’,” notes Simonson. “Usually, we
only hear from clients when things go wrong or aren’t
working. Now, they report improved performance to
our service center. The ProLiant DL380 G6 Servers,
combined with StorageWorks, improves performance
and clients notice.”

Smart Array iSCSI storage also enables Compudyne
to dynamically grow storage without the added
expense of SAN technology. According to Simonson,
“If we have Ethernet connectivity, we can carve out
disk space on the MSA and create iSCSI targets to
deliver storage in a timely and cost-effective fashion.”

Paying the benefits forward
Compudyne is passing along some savings to clients.
Prior to implementing the VMs on the ProLiant DL380
G6 Servers, clients had to purchase physical parts
and labor on an ad hoc basis. Now, Compudyne
charges them a set monthly fee, which is far more
economical for clients and less complicated and
expensive for Compudyne to manage.

Simonson says that “Customers know what the fixed
monthly fee is versus a situation where one month
a client can have zero IT expense, but the next
month they are faced with thousands of dollars of
service bills.”

As a result of virtualizing with HP, Compudyne can
offer a range of hosted solutions, including Exchange
2007, IIS (Web hosting), full hosted servers processing
customer’s logins, and data storage.

The IT team now has reclaimed staff time available
to perform testing of client applications on the
VMs, whereas before, loading and testing simply
required too much time and resources. This increase
in application testing has led to less downtime, a
welcome benefit to clients.

According to Simonson, “Virtualization allows us the
flexibility to create LAB environments and mimic client
deployments when dealing with new technologies.
Having the ability to mock deploy a solution in a LAB
enables our engineers to have the confidence and
understanding to successfully deploy solutions, which
ultimately streamlines rollouts and reduces unplanned
downtime for updates, patches, software upgrades, or
new deployments.”

Pleased with the diminished physical footprint and
power and cooling savings they’ve experienced
with the ProLiant DL380 G6 Servers, Compudyne is
recommending them to clients. “It’s becoming more
and more of an everyday thing where we’re selling a
virtual machine versus a physical server. We feel a lot
more comfortable with the HP ProLiant DL380 G6 line
with power consumption and the size of the footprint.
We took the initiative with several of our clients who
purchased a lot of HP servers and pointed them down
the DL380 G6 path because of the cost savings the
G6 servers offer,” says Simonson.

Confirming the longstanding theory that a happy client
makes a great product evangelist, Simonson adds:
“We always sell HP servers and HP ProCurve switches
because in our experience they give us the best bang
for the buck and they are very reliable.”
