Section 9A
About Ethernet on the Sprint SmartView Software
Ethernet is the most common method that computers use to establish wired (non-wireless)
connections to networks. Perhaps you just know it as the network port on the back of your
computer or as the cable (attached to that port) that leads to your local network at work. At
home, you may know it as the line that attaches your computer to a cable modem or a DSL
modem.
Although Microsoft Windows connects to Ethernet networks automatically when you attach an
Ethernet network cable to your computer, the Sprint SmartView software can detect when such
a connection occurs and (if desired) shut down its own connections in response.
Additionally, some versions of the Sprint SmartView software provide enhanced functionality for
managing Ethernet connections. The enhancements provided include the ability to do the
following:
manually disconnect from an Ethernet network and reconnect to it without detaching the
cable from your computer.
automatically launch selected applications when you successfully establish an Ethernet
connection.
automatically log into a VPN when you sucessfully establish an Ethernet connection
specify the priority of individual Ethernet networks in the Network Profiles window.
If you are using Sprint SmartView’s new interface, support for enhanced Ethernet management
will be indicated by the appearance of the Ethernet icon in the main window. Additionally, an
Ethernet Devices heading will appear in the Hardware tab of the Settings window.
