Multiple SSID and VLAN Support
OL-3159-01
New Features
VLANs provide the segmentation services traditionally provided by routers in LAN configurations.
Routers in VLAN topologies provide broadcast filtering, security, address summarization, and
traffic-flow management. None of the switches within the defined group bridge any frames, not even
broadcast frames, between two VLANs.
VLANs are extended into the wireless realm by adding IEEE 802.1Q tag awareness to the access point.
Frames destined for different VLANs are transmitted by the access point wirelessly on different SSIDs.
When a client is associated to an SSID that is linked to a particular VLAN, then the client receives
packets that were 802.1Q tagged for that VLAN. When a client associated to a VLAN-linked SSID sends
a packet to the access point, the access point tags the packet with an 802.1Q tag for the VLAN before
forwarding the packet onto the wired network.
illustrates the difference between traditional physical LAN segmentation and logical VLAN
segmentation with wireless devices connected.
