During navigation, the 961 automatically selects and displays 
on the CHART screen the charts for your cruising area. To 
help the 961 manage this chart selection process, you can 
mark a chart in the database as either PREFER, NORMAL, or 
AVOID

 by using the USAGE key (this key isn’t available if the 

database is void of charts). With a chart highlighted on the 
CHARTS IN DATABASE

 screen, press the USAGE key to cycle 

through the PREFER, NORMAL, and AVOID choices; simply 
make your choices as follows: 

•

mark a chart NORMAL to tell the 961 select and display 
this chart if it appears to be the best choice for your loca-
tion.

•

marking a chart as PREFER tells the 961 to prefer this 
particular chart—even when others are available—as it 
switches charts during navigation. For example, mark a 
chart PREFER because the scale is better, provides better 
information, and so on.

•

mark a chart AVOID if you don’t want the 961 to select 
and display this chart as it switches charts during naviga-
tion; however, this chart will be displayed when no others 
are available with similar coverage areas.

If you specifically want to mark HCRF charts as prefer, normal, or
avoid, please note that you do so on the same screen as BSB
charts—the 

CHARTS IN DATABASE

 screen—not the 

HCRF

CHARTS IN DATABASE

 screen. Why? The 

HCRF CHARTS

IN DATABASE

 screen doesn’t have the option to change chart

usage; this screen only lists the HCRF chart numbers, names, chart
CD numbers and their dates, and the update CD numbers and their
dates.

You can display a list of charts on either a BSB Chart CD or an 
HCRF Update CD (it isn’t possible to display a list of HCRF 
charts on HCRF Chart CDs). 

1. Choose the CD that contains the charts you want to list,

and insert that CD into the drive.
