About heart rate reserve
Heart rate reserve (HRR) is a term used to describe the difference
between a person’s resting heart rate (HR
rest
) and maximum heart rate
(HR
max
). The formula is:
HRR = HR
max
 – HR
rest

The BF-1 actually measures and calculates the percentage of heart rate
reserve (%HRR) and uses this as a measurement of exercise intensity.
By using %HRR as the exercise intensity, the optimal heart rate (HR) in
exercising is calculated. The formula is:
HR = HRR x %HRR + HR
rest
For example, if your HR
max
 is 180 bpm, HR
rest
 is 60 bpm and target
%HRR is 70%, the HR is calculated as:
HR = (180 – 60) x 0.7 + 60 = 144
After the Interval and Target setting is finished, the following display appears.
