DCF Guide
The radio-controlled travel clock has a DCF controlled clock mechanism, which automatically
synchronizes the time display to the DCF-signal.  It is no longer necessary to set the time man-
ually.
The time is adjusted by synchronising with the DCF-signal from the caesium atomic clock at the
“Physikalisch Technischen Bundesanstalt” in Braunschweig (Germany). This ensures that it
achieves a very high operational precision. The clock also operates as a high precision quartz
clock, when there is failure in the radio reception.

What is DCF?
The DCF-signal is an encoded radio signal, which receives the time information from the cae-
sium atomic clock at PTB Braunschweig.
This atomic clock is so accurate that the theoretical possibility of a deviation of +/- 1 second is
only one in one million years.
The DCF-signal is encoded and transmitted via a DCF-transmitter in Mainflingen near Frankfurt.
The transmitter has a range of approximately 1,500 km.
Clocks that are equipped with a DCF receiver can receive and decode the DCF-signal within this
transmission range.
It is not necessary to set the time manually with a DCF clock, e.g. changing the time from winter
to summer time.
Reception of the DCF-signal like other broadcasts is dependent on place and position, as well
as on interference, e.g. from computers, televisions or microwaves.
Rooms with reinforced concrete construction, which weaken the DCF-signal, can also be a fur-
ther reason for poor reception.
Inserting/Replacing the Batteries
Keep batteries out of the reach of children.
Make sure that the polarity is correct when inserting the batteries.
Remove the battery, if you are not going to use the device for a while, to pre-
vent damage from leaking. Leaking or damaged batteries/accumulators can
cause acid burns to the skin. Wear protective gloves when handling damaged
batteries/accumulators.
Keep them out of reach of children. Do not leave batteries lying around. There
is the risk that the batteries may be swallowed by children or pets.
Replace all of the batteries at the same time. Mixing old and new batteries
may lead to battery leakage and thus to damage to the device.
Make sure that batteries are not short-circuited or thrown into a fire. Do not
attempt to recharge the batteries. There is a danger of explosion.
• Open the cover of the battery compartment (8) on the back of the device.
• Insert three new 1.5V micro-batteries (AAA) in the battery compartment, paying attention to the
polarity markings. The correct polarity is indicated in the battery compartment.
• Close the battery compartment (8) again.
• After a few seconds, the clock begins searching for the DCF-signal and starts a reception
attempt. Do not press the buttons during this stage.
• When the display’s contrast fades or when the display light no longer flashes, the batteries are
flat and need to be replaced as described above.
• To ensure long battery life, only use alkaline types.
The use of rechargeable batteries leads to a reduced operating time, because of
the lower voltage and capacity.
Automatic Time Adjustment
• After inserting the batteries, the clock is automatically set to the current time.
• Do not press the buttons during this process.
• The reception power of the DCF-signal is shown on the left, next to the seconds display (2),
by an aerial symbol. The more segments that are lit, the better the reception.
• Place the clock so that, where possible, many segments are shown. The best place for a syn-
chronisation is preferably a place by the window, and where possible far away from electron-
ic devices.
• Normally, this synchronisation process is completed in a few minutes.  The clock then shows
the current time and date on the display.
• If  DCF-reception is not possible, no segments are displayed above the aerial symbol.
If the DCF reception is disturbed, try to find another position and/or leave the clock
near a window during the night.
At night the reception is better, so the clock is normally synchronized the next
morning.
Manual Guide for Setting the Time
• To start the manual synchronisation process, just press the °C/°F (6) button for longer than
three seconds.
• The aerial symbol flashes and the synchronisation process starts as described above.
Setting the Time Manually
• Press the button ALM ON/OFF (4) while the display shows the time as normal and keep it
pressed, until the hour indication starts flashing.
• Use the ADJ (5) button to set the hours.
• Press the ALM ON/OFF (4) button again.
• Set the remaining parameters as described above in the following order:
minutes > seconds > 12/24h-format > year > month > day
• Push the MODE (3) button, to save the settings and to return to the normal time display.
By pushing the ADJ (5) button slightly longer, the values for the setting are changed
continuously.
When a button has not been pressed for a longer period during the setting, the clock
will automatically leave the setting mode.
Alarm function
• Press the MODE (3) button with the normal time displayed to change the alarm indication.
• Press the button ALM ON/OFF (4)  and keep it depressed, until the hour indication flashes.

• Press the ALM ON/OFF (4) button again.
• Now, set the minutes as described above,
• Push the MODE (3) button, to save the settings and to return to the normal time display.
By pushing the ADJ (5) button slightly longer, the values for the setting are changed
continuously.
When a button has not been pressed for a longer period during the setting, the clock
will automatically leave the setting mode and saves the set alarm time.
• Push the ALM ON/OFF (4) button to activate or deactivate the alarm function.
• When the alarm function is activated the alarm symbol will be shown on the left, next to the

Troubleshooting
By purchasing this radio-controlled travel clock, you have acquired a product with state of the art
design that is operationally reliable.
Nevertheless, problems or faults may occur.
This is why we would like to describe here, how possible problems can be solved:
The clock does not synchronise or has a bad reception:
• The distance to the DCF-transmitter is to far or limited by the geographic conditions.
• Change the position and turn off interfering equipment such as televisions, computers or
microwaves.
• Avoid placing it in the neighbourhood of large metal surfaces, which can shield the radio sig-
nals.  Further, metal vaporized windows can influence the signal reception.
• Place the clock in front of a window to synchronise it and point the front or back in the direc-
tion of Frankfurt (Germany).
• Leave the clock to work during the night to reduce the atmospheric disturbance.
The temperature shown is not right:
• The clock was exposed to direct sunlight.
• The batteries are flat.
The display shows strange characters or the display is empty. The device no longer
reacts to input:
• Push the RESET (7) button with a pointed object, to reset the installed microprocessor.
Maintenance and Care
This device is maintenance-free. Only clean the exterior of the device with a soft dry cloth or a
little brush.
Never use caustic cleaning agents or chemical solutions as the surface of the housing could be
damaged.
Disposal
Please dispose the product, when it is no longer in use, according to the current
statutory requirements.
Disposal of used batteries/rechargeable batteries
As the end user, you are required by law (Battery Ordinance) to return all
used batteries/rechargeable batteries; disposal of them in the household
