The Benefits of Server Consolidation
Using an HP ProLiant BL35p Server Blades and four ProLiant BL685c Servers
in concert with HP Integrity Virtual machines to consolidate HP-UX servers,
and VMware virtualization software to consolidate Windows and Linux servers,
Bernalillo County has to date been able to reduce the number of physical servers
that run vital applications from 100 down to 40, and will consolidate even
further in the coming months. The county has saved on maintenance time and
costs, because it can now maintain fewer servers. Gruen estimates that the
county has been able to reduce maintenance needs by 15%.
The server consolidation project offers other financial benefits as well. When
the project is finished, Gruen estimates that power and cooling costs will be
reduced by 40%. In addition, because of the way that the county has licensed
its Windows-based servers on the HP BladeSystem environment, the county has
been able to save approximately $10,000 to $15,000 a year in licensing costs.
Using HP servers in a virtualized environment, Bernalillo County can now deploy
new applications and services requiring servers far more quickly than previously.
Rather than having to go through a procurement process, waiting for delivery,
and then physically deploying a server, which used to take a month, it can now
build and deploy a virtualized server in two hours.
With virtualized servers and Integrity Virtual Machines, the county is creating
virtual servers to perform source code control for its IT department. If the
county did not use the HP BladeSystem and virtualized servers, it would need
to buy additional hardware, storage and software licenses. By not having to
purchase the additional hardware and software, it has saved $7,000.
during the course of the consolidation project, the county has also found that
the virtualized servers offer a performance boost, and applications now run
more quickly than they did previously.
Moving off the Mainframe
Bernalillo County is in the midst of moving from a mainframe to HP servers for
its ERP project. So far, the development and QA portions of the mainframe
have been replaced with four ProLiant BL685c Server Blades running VMware.
It is hosting SAP on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server
2005. When the project is finished, the rest of the SAP ERP application, the
county’s Web portal, SAP Business Intelligence data warehouse, and customer
relationship management (CRM) applications will all run on HP servers.
By migrating off the mainframe and to HP servers, the county will improve its
procurement process, integrate disparate systems for which it previously had
to write custom interfaces, and improve flexibility. There will be fewer vendors
involved in the ERP system, and as a result, the system will run more smoothly. It
will take less time to integrate new features and systems, and update applications.
In addition, it has become increasingly difficult to find programmers with an
expertise in mainframe systems, and it will be easier for the county to find
programmers to work on the ERP system. The county also expects to see
improvements in application performance.
 n
As a result of the HP solutions,
Bernalillo County has improved
the reliability of its applications,
consolidated servers, reduced
costs, cut maintenance costs, sim-
plified server maintenance, and
can deploy new servers far more
quickly. By migrating from the
mainframe, it will improve perfor-
mance, and increase applications
simplicity and flexibility. The new
EVA storage gives the county a
more flexible storage infrastruc-
ture, allows it to build a disaster
recovery plan, and will lead to a
projected, cumulative five-year
net benefit of $2,223,044.
