Siemens AG is a German multinational conglomerate company, which was founded on October 12, 1847 by Werner von Siemens and Johann Georg Halske. Based on the telegraph, his invention used a needle to point to the sequence of letters, instead of using Morse code. The company opened its first workshop, which was called Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske. In 1848 the company built the firts long-distance line in Europe: from Berlin to Frankfurt am Main. In 1867, Werner von Siemens described a dynamo without permanent magnets. Siemens was the firts company to build such devices. Siemens & Halske was incorporated in 1897. During the 1920 and 1930’s S&H started to manufecture radios, television sets and electron microscopes. In the 1920 Siemens constructed the Ardnacrusha Hydro Power station on the river Shannon in Irish Free State, and it was the world’s first for its design. In the 1950s and from its new base in Bavaria. S&H started to manufacture computers, semiconductor devices, washing machines and pacemakers. In 1969 Siemens formed Kraftwerk Union with AEG by pooling their nuclear power businesses. The company’s first digital telephone exchange was produced in 1980. Now the company produces power generation technologies, industrial and building automaions, medical technology, railway vehicles, water treatment systems, fire alarms, PLM software. Headquarters are located in Berlin and Munich, Germany. The number of employees is more than 348,000 persons.
