The FortiSwitch-5003 module provides switching for the FortiGate-5140 chassis 
and the FortiGate-5050 chassis. This switching takes the form of backplane HA 
heartbeat connections between FortiGate-5000 series modules installed in a 
FortiGate-5140 chassis or a FortiGate-5050 chassis.

A single FortiSwitch-5003 installed in a FortiGate-5140 or FortiGate-5050 chassis 
provides HA heartbeat switching for all of the FortiGate-5000 series modules 
installed in the chassis. The FortiGate-5000 series modules could all be in the 
same HA cluster or in multiple clusters. As well, some FortiGate-5000 series 
modules can be in a cluster and some operating as standalone units. You can 
also mix clusters of different FortiGate-5000 series modules in the same chassis.

The FortiSwitch-5003 module also supports HA heartbeat connections between 
two FortiGate-5140 or two FortiGate-5050 chassis.

You can install a second FortiSwitch-5003 module in a FortiGate-5140 or 
FortiGate-5050 chassis as a backup or redundant switch. In this configuration, if 
one of the FortiSwitch-5003 modules fails, or is removed from the chassis, HA 
heartbeat communication is not interrupted.

The FortiSwitch-5003 module includes the following features:
