Install the NMI Software Remotely From the Alarm 
Manager Server 
Remote installation of the NMI software is accomplished in the following three 
steps. 
1  Stage the compressed NMI files on the Alarm Manager server. 
2  Transfer the files from the Alarm Manager server to the DNCS. 
3  Telnet into the DNCS and install the NMI software. 
The procedures in this section guide you through all the required steps to install the 
NMI software from the Alarm Manager server. 
 
Important Notes Before Remotely Installing the NMI Software 
Before remotely installing the NMI software, note these important points: 
 
Do not perform the steps in this section if you have already installed NMI 
software using the instructions in the previous section, Install the NMI Software 
Directly onto the DNCS
 
You must uninstall any existing version of NMI software before installing a new 
version. See Uninstall the NMI Software in Chapter 3 for the procedure to 
uninstall the NMI software. 
 
Before remotely installing the NMI software, be certain that no one else is 
currently logged in to the DNCS on which you will install the software, and that 
no one else logs in until the NMI installation is complete. The NMI installation 
sets several new UNIX environment variables that will not take affect until NMI 
installation is complete. 
 
Staging the NMI Software on the Alarm Manager Server 
Use the following procedure to stage the NMI software on the Alarm Manager 
server. 
1  Open an xterm window on the Alarm Manager server. 
2  Complete the following steps to log on to the xterm window as root user. 
a  Type su - and press Enter. The password prompt appears. 
b  Type the root password and press Enter
3  Insert the NMI CD into the CD-ROM drive of the Alarm Manager server. The 
system automatically mounts the CD to /cdrom/cdrom0. 
Note:  On some systems the Auto Run window opens. You can close the Auto 
Run window.
